Jeroen Manuhutu's Vocal Tip of the Month: May 2008

Category: Articles
Posted by Jeroen Manuhutu at May 1, 2008 3:45 AM

Monthly free vocal tip by top singer and singing teacher Jeroen Manuhutu from The Netherlands.

Timing can be described by deliberately differing from the the written music for expressive reasons. You could use three ways to do this: backward (laid-back), straight on the notes and forward. If you sing a complete line backward or forward it is called backward and forward phrasing. Experiment with those three ways and experience the emotions that go along with it. A good way to start practicing this is to extremely exaggerate the chosen timing. Adjust your timing to the style, the lyrics and the mood of the song. If you want to keep the attention of the audience, a good thing to do is to "play" with your timing and to use different ways of timing in the right places.
