Round Table : The Passagio

"The Break", or more formally referred to as the "Passagio" (Passage in Italian) is a term used in singing to describe the pitch ranges in which vocal registration events occur. Popular terminology describes registrations beneath the passagio as the "chest voice" where any singer can produce a powerful sound, and above it lies the "head voice", where a powerful and resonant sound is accessible only with advanced vocal training and is arguably, one of the primary feats to master when engaged in advanced vocal training. The artistic mission is to develop the illusion that the chest voice and the head voice are seamlessly connected by maintaining an even timbre throughout the vocalists entire vocal range, while eliminating any "breaking" or "yodeling" when "passing" from low notes to high notes. As many singers already know, this is easier said, then done.

Given the magnitude of importance and universal interest in this topic for all singers in all genre's, we felt it would make sense to ask our Voice Council to discuss this topic for Voicecouncil.com readers.  There are different philosophies that abound... but all agree, it is an issue that can sometimes make or break the singers ability to sing with complete freedom and capability. If you are struggling with this issue, listen to our round table discussion and check out these content contributions made by our Voice Council. We are certain you will find this to be at the top of your list of things you would like to understand better and this information will certainly help you.
