app review: Simple Songwriter

What it Does

Helps you compose songs and make rudimentary recordings of them.

The Bottom Line

A good song-writing app for a beginner, or anyone who likes to create with simple tools.

Gossip (3)

This app kept crashing and seemed to have few bugs, but that did not ruin the experience. This was easy to use, and doesn’t require knowledge of musical theory.

It lives up to its name – simple. You only get six chords to choose from, but think of all the famous songs that use even less chords.

You can save songs, and tweak with steps mode. You cannot select minor keys, anything other than 3/4 or 4/4 time. You cannot export your songs.

Despite wishing it could do a few more things, people seem to like this app.

Musician's Note

I would give this app to my kids – and I don’t mean that as an insult to the app. My children’s music education is a serious matter to me. For a beginner or a young person this app is a great tool (aside from the fact that it occasionally bugs out).

The app gives you basic chords to choose from, and only the most rudimentary way of recording your ideas. Some accomplished musicians may even enjoy the discipline of creating with a limited set of tools.

This app is not meant to be a way of sharing high-quality recordings with your fans, but rather it helps you experiement with and preserve your ideas in the privacy of your own room.

I must add that there is one part of the app that my kids probably couldn’t figure out just yet – the steps function. It is very handy, but to my mind requires more than a beginner level of skill. It allows you to adjust the timing of your chords by assigning them to a “step” within each measure.
