Berklee graduate Jackie Venson opened for Miranda Lambert and Angie Stone, and won the Belk Southern Musician Showcase.
She talks to VoiceCouncil about honing her craft and recording her live album.
How did you break through the ‘noise on the internet’? Any particular campaigns or techniques?
I did a ton of research on SEO, Facebook, Twitter & Instagram engagement and how to get people to notice posts. I did experiments with Facebook advertising as well. I also upped my game on YouTube, putting more time and money into my videos and hired publicists to talk about my videos as I released them.
What sets you apart from your contemporaries?
I have a knack for playing and learning instruments. I could be a one-woman-band. Touring can be expensive but not if I’m the only one on the tour. Lots of folks these days do not really master their instrument.
Biggest challenge to breaking out and sharing your music with new people
Being heard or found despite all of the millions of artists doing the same thing, especially through the noise of the internet.
A few ingredients of a memorable vocal performance?
Lots of smiling, lots of joy and a set list you can be excited about.
How do you compile the perfect set list?
I typically pull up a list of all of my songs and before the set compile the set list based on exactly my mood. Sometimes I have to choose the songs based on how krunk I think the crowd will be.
Most important lesson you have learned about social media
It’s not real life, it may enhance my business and exposure but it’s still very important to actually show up in real life and make physical connections with people.
Have you got any special fans?
My fan base in Austin, San Diego and Berlin is almost completely comprised of people I have seen at several shows over the years and it’s just a beautiful thing. I love going to shows, setting up and looking out to see people I’ve seen for years continue to show love and support.
When is your next release?
I’m doing a live album and recording on February 28 in Austin TX at Strange Brew Lounge Side and it will be my next release.
Have you done a live album before? Why did you choose to do this?
I truly believe live albums and studio albums are night and day. The studio album is missing the energy of the crowd so a certain amount of energy is missing. I’ve never done a live album and I’m addicted to trying new things.
Jackie Venson studied piano, singing and songwriting since a young age, then studied guitar, production and composition at Berklee College of Music. Jackie caught the attention of producer Eddy Hobizal, who, along with seasoned musicians, completed the vision of Venson’s self-titled project.
