Giselle – My Immortal cover

Vocal Coach Comments from Basix:

Giselle, What I like the most is that you show how much a difference it makes to do 3 simultaneous video recordings. Really like it. Maybe I’m not the right audience for this kind of video, but I don’t really understand what I’m supposed to do with it. I like your voice and you surely know how to use it, but the sound of it is quite close to the voice on the original recording. Everything is actually so close to the original recording that I’d rather hear Evanesence. So, I need a definite reason for listening to your version.

Giselle’s Bio:

My name is Giselle, I’m 21 years old. I have always loved singing. Hope you like my work.

First off well done for having a go at it and I suppose I’d better state straight away that my analysis comes from the perspective of a producer as opposed to a professional voice coach. So, take the following with as big a pinch of salt as you wish…. :-)

This is such a difficult track to do proper justice to – I think I detect a little bit of snatching/grabbing at the lyrics towards the end of the second verse, which is unfortunate – verse one is almost spot on, well done – and in the middle 8 the only critique I’ve got is that you’re slightly down on power – the crescendo in the middle 8 is a real “chest voice”/open up the throat part, its the most emotive part of the song – and as this version is more along the lines of a faithful cover as opposed to your own interpretation, if you’re going to do it, its best to do it “properly” – but always remember, its you, not Amy Lee that we’re listening to here, never forget that – you dont have to rigidly follow her step for step, its as much – if not more – about you sounding like you rather than you proving you can sound like Amy. Theres nothing wrong that I can hear with your pitching or tuning and I dont think there are issues with your breathing or timing either. For the most part, the technique is there already.

    Does that make any sense?

The other key thing that sometimes allows some vocal performers to really shine over those who may be technically better, is feel. With a big track that is as emotional as this one is, feel is paramount. And its there in places in this version. Not quite all the way through, but its definitely getting there. And the only way that really comes is by getting inside the song and singing it like you really, really mean it. And that is one of the most difficult things a singer will ever be faced with. That is the ethereal quality, that thing that audiences connect with on an emotional level. There is no shortage of technically brilliant vocalists who have no feel at all (Sinatra, IMHO), and others who have bags of feel but voices that considered purely on natural tone, you would not think would be worth listening to (Simon Le Bon for one, also James Brown, possibly even John Rzezniak), but because they have feel in abundance, this is what sets them apart and why an audience connects with them… And you’ve got that, its obvious in verse one and the beginning of verse two and there is a seed of it in the middle 8.

I dont mean to be condescending, but you’re only 21; you have the tools, the raw material to do this and continue to develop. Give yourself time, be patient, keep working at it, you’ll always be learning. Good luck and I’m sure we havent seen the last of you.
