Mary Lankford – One Way Love

Hey there VoiceCouncil readers! I am a vocalist recently taking some time out to record. I’ve sang in all kinds of groups ranging from a capella, gospel, funk, soul, R&B, choir, rock, the list goes on! I also am a host for a local TV show that showcases independent and unsigned artists in the DMV area! Thanks for taking a listen!

Hi Mary! The first thing I want to observe is how excellently you keep your cool in a very challenging atmosphere! You certainly have what it takes to be a performer. The second thing is that I like your vocal style, you have an engaging, relaxed manner. I think the only thing I have to say is just keep your feet planted on the floor and this may help you harness your vocal power. Keep up the awesome work!!

Mary your amazing and have always been amazing I wish only the best for you.

  • Hi, Mary. You are an artist!!! You look so confident and relaxed. The colour of your voice is lovely. Only one “but” (and once again, I must say I am an amateur only, and a bad one). Although the sound of the video is not very good, it still allows to appreciate how you are singing “from your throat”. If you could support your breathing from below you could sound more powerful. I donĀ“t mean louder. I am speaking about energy but under control. Think of Lisa Standfield, Sade or Mariah Carey, for example. They have mastered how to deal with very intimate passages while sounding big at the same time. Low or controlled volume should not mean lack of energy. If you lose energy you will find it hard to transmit emotion. And this is what I miss in your video: feelings. Well, this is a personal oppinion based on this recording. I am sure you would sound much better if I were at the venue listening to you instead of behind a laptop. Wish you all the best in your career.

  • Wow! Thanks! I appreciate your comment…I definitely need to work on breathing techniques. I feel it's a life-long study, hahah! I've always been trying to gain more power from my voice and breathe more from the diaphragm.

    Hi Mary,

You seem to have a natural energy that makes people want to dance and have fun around you. Keep us posted on your recording…would be great to check out those pipes in full regalia! It's difficult with the audio quality to pick out the subtle nuances in your melodies and raps. I look forward to hearing more from you :)
