NEW Vocal Coach in Residence: Mark De-Lisser

He’s worked with some of the top vocal talent around today – Jessie J, Olly Murs, Jamie Woon and Beverly Knight.

He’s also a recognized teacher at many music institutions, leads the renowned ACM Gospel Choir and held several high profile TV roles including Vocal Coach on BBC’s The Voice UK.

We’re delighted that our Vocal Coach in Residence for the next 8 weeks is Mark De-Lisser

We’ve given Mark just one sentence to answer each of our questions…

Fav. Album
8701 – Usher

Best advice someone ever gave you about performing.
Rehearse like you were on stage – don’t just go through the motions, really go for it so that you can get in the right frame before you hit the stage.

Vocalists who inspire:
Donny Hathaway, Jeff Buckley, Richard Smallwood, Take 6. All different, but all part of my musical journey to date.

The perfect mic for you:
Live performance – SM 58.
Recording, sE -Gemini.

First singing experience.
Church at the age of 5. Sang a simple children’s song and my parents rewarded me by buying me a 3 piece suit. (I was 5 years old! A nice train set would have been great…)

A favorite nerves remedy
Smelling an aroma that I love – like it was the last time I would ever smell it…long inward breaths and savor the moment.

Phobias
Swimming – the breathing thing is kinda different to singing…I will probably drown if I try it. (But I have to do it for survival– I know!)

Weirdest thing to happen in a performance.
Getting a standing ovation in the middle of a song that had a further 6 minutes to run.

Worst singing advice you ever heard:
“You must always sing from your diaphragm” said to 5 year olds. What 5 year old knows where or what that even is?

Where most singers mess up with vocal health.
Thinking that their voice is going to be healthy 100% of the time.

What you’d never leave home without.
God.

What drains your batteries?
Not doing something I love.

What charges them?
Doing something I love.

Top recording tip:
When they press record for the first time, laugh.

What’s different about a vocalist vocation today compared to 20 years ago?
Back then they had to do it, now they just think they can do it.

Favorite quote about singing:
Never B#, never Bb always B NATURAL! (Couldn’t find the natural symbol!)

Your life philosophy in 10 words:
Perfection is not a destination but a constant journey. Selah.

The perfect day
Listening to my 2 year old sing and just enjoying it. In key or out of key, flat or sharp, just enjoying it.
