Jai Ramage is a coach and talent scout for The Voice (both BBC and ITV), and an industry coach to top UK recording artists and musical theatre performers such as The Vamps, and Lucy O’Byrne from the West End’s Les Miserables.
She is February’s Vocal Coach in Residence and will be talking about how to control your voice when you’re nervous and how to nail that audition.
Here is her introductory quickfire round of questions:
First record bought:
Stand and Deliver – Adam and the Ants (ooh that shows my age!)
To play Fantine in Les Miserables or BE Madonna.
Most embarrassing moment on stage:
Tripping over a staircase backwards onto my bottom with my legs in the air. It was supposed to have moved out of the way so I didn’t expect it to be there.
Worst piece of advice you’ve ever heard about singing:
Sing from the diaphragm!
‘Get Happy’ is Jai’s favourite song to sing in the car
Favorite song to sing in the shower/car:
‘Get Happy’ – Judy Garland.
If you had to have someone else’s voice who’s would it be?
Favourite film on singing?
I have to say Dreamgirls purely because of the phenomenal voices in it.
Favourite vocal health remedy:
Steam and sleep (don’t do them at the same time!)
Favourite philosophical singing quote:
‘Proceed as if success is inevitable’.
Worst venue experience ever?
Rats backstage is never good.
Shure SM58 but actually, I don’t mind as long as the sound man is good.
What’s your perfect day off?
Walking the dog in the countryside with family and friends followed by a pub lunch around the fire.
