Review: Heil’s Fin, Live Vocal Mic

Need your vocals to light up on stage?

Item: Heil Fin, Live Vocal Microphone

Price: US $238, UK £189

Mic Rating:

At A Glance: The Fin is a retro styled microphone from Heil that is designed to sound great & look great on stage. Primarily aimed at vocalists and broadcasters, it features a cardioid pattern and a frequency response tailored to ensure clear and articulate vocals and speech. Its stylish chrome body also features a series of LED lights that are powered by phantom power and are available in a range of colours to suit the look you want on stage.

High Notes: The Fin’s striking looks are also matched by great sonic performance on vocals. It is capable of producing a rich vocal sound with subtle presence peak that helps cut through the mix. The microphone will fit on to a standard boom stand (it is not designed to be hand-held) and it has a touch metal chassis to withstand years of use.

Off Pitch: Some users report that the fin is slightly more prone to feedback than other mics (such as an SM58), which could cause problems if you are performing in loud environments. Some may think the LED lights a little gimmicky; however the mic is unaffected when they are switched off. The microphone is quite expensive in Europe when compared to the American price.

A VoiceCouncil Reviewer Says: If you are looking for something a bit special on stage, then the Fin could be the perfect microphone for you. It excels as a vocal microphone; however it can also work well on harmonica and brass instruments. On the other hand, it can be slightly more prone to feedback on stage than some handheld mics; so it may not be the best choice for singers performing with very loud bands who need their monitor speakers up particularly loud to compensate. For other “retro-styled” microphones you may also want to look at the Shure SH 55 & Super 55, as well as the T-Bone GM55 & Superlux WH-5.
