Mic Rating:

At A Glance: The Rode NT USB is a versatile studio-quality USB microphone that is aimed at those wanting to start recording at home. It is a cardioid, side-address USB microphone that connects directly into your computer to enable you to record vocals or instruments without the need for any other interface. It can capture audio at up to 16-bit/48kHz resolution and has an integrated headphone amplifier and 1/8″ stereo headphone jack that allows for monitoring. As well as working on both PC and Mac, the NT-USB is also fully compatible with the Apple iPad (Apple USB Camera Connection kit required), for use with GarageBand and other audio apps.

High Notes: The microphone comes with a good range of accessories to get you started; including an all-metal pop shield, stand mount, desktop stand, zip case and a long 6m USB cable. The microphone produces a clean and fairly neutral sound that should suit most voices or instruments you want to record. There is an on-mic “Direct Mix Control” that allows you to select the level between the mic input and source input for monitoring through the mic’s headphone jack. It is very simple and quick to set up and should work with any software you want to record with.

Off Pitch: There is very little to fault with the microphone considering its price and target audience.

VoiceCouncil Reviewer Says: The Rode NT USB is well-designed and good sounding microphone that is a great option for recording demos at home. Setting it up takes barely any time or effort, allowing you to focus on performing and creating music. It is particularly well suited to singers who do not have a specific studio space at home or who want to record ideas while traveling. Although the recording quality on offer is not going to compete with results you would get in a good studio with a top vocal mic, if you want a simple way to record your ideas, produce demos to share with people or to capture a live performance for YouTube, the Rode NT USB is highly recommended.
