Review: Sennheiser EW 135 Wireless Microphone System

Is this wireless microphone system worth the price tag?

Item: Sennheiser EW 135 G3 Wireless Microphone System

Price: US $599, UK £519

Mic Rating:

At a Glance: The Sennheiser EW 135 G3 Vocal System is a wireless, handheld, dynamic microphone package aimed at professional vocalists and public speakers. It is capable of delivering crystal clear sound quality over a large enough range for most applications and it can be used in most countries without needing a licence. Included with the microphone is a transmitter, rack-mount receiver, stand clip and various other accessories that can be used with the device.

High Notes: The system features an auto search function to make setting up easy. This automatically searches for the best clean channel to operate on with the push of a single button and then pairs the transmitter and receiver together. On the microphone there is a menu system that allows you to adjust a range of parameters such as mic gain and the integrated equalizer. The mic is solidly built and sounds great on both vocals and the spoken word; handling noise is kept to a minimum. It also has useful functions such as a battery indicator and a lock mode so that you do not accidently turn the mic off during a performance.

Off Pitch: The package is very expensive in the UK when compared to the US price. Some of the advanced settings require some technical knowledge and a bit of time setting up if you want to get the best out of the unit. It also would have been nice if Sennheiser included a carrying pouch with the mic.

A VoiceCouncil Review Says: Sennheiser’s EW 135 G3 Wireless Microphone System is a quality product with good sound quality, battery life and build-quality. It will serve many singers well in live settings – it’s just a shame the European price is so much higher than the same unit in the USA.

Alternative wireless systems you might want to look into: the Line6 XD-V75, Shure’s PGX24E/Beta58 and the AKG WMS 450HT D5.
