Review: Synchro Arts Revoice Pro

Need help tightening up your backing vocals in the studio?

Item: Synchro Arts Revoice Pro, vocal aligning software

Price: US: $599, UK: £374

Mic Scale:

At A Glance: Revoice Pro is stand-alone computer software for the studio that can automatically time-align and tune vocal doubles that you have recorded so that they precicely match your lead vocals. This can make vocal mixes sound much tighter as it is often hard to get the timing of two performances exactly the same. It can also be used on speech when you need to overdub dialogue in a video and want to keep the lip-sync spot on. Revoice Pro works with ANY professional Mac-based Digital Audio Editor including Pro Tools, Cubase, and Logic.

High Notes: Revoice Pro is very effective at quickly making two vocal performances fit together. As well as correcting the timing, it can also make the double track of the follow pitch changes of the original. The parameters can be adjusted so that the user can select how closely the two tracks should match, which allows you to make the double sound more natural that if it was an exact match. If you regularly mix vocal tracks in your studio, the software can save you hours of time – especially when there is no option to get the singer back for another take.

Off Pitch: The software is quite expensive unless you are running a commercial studio and are regularly mixing vocals. Although it is unique and can save hours of editing in the studio, for home users it can appear particularly expensive considering that the same results can effectively be achieved via manually adjusting the waveforms of the double recordings. This can be done using the editing tools found in most DAW software applications – although it is a much more complicated and time-consuming process. It is also worth noting that the software is currently Mac only.

A VoiceCouncil Reviewer Says: Revoice Pro generally works extremely well, however in more extreme settings (and particular when used to match speech to a dub track), artefacts can appear and become slightly noticeable. The automatic doubler feature works well, although the best results will tend to be found when using another take and matching it to the lead track. If you like idea of Revoice Pro but are put off by the price, Synchro Arts also produce a piece of software called VocALign that offers some of the same features found in Revoice Pro but costs close to half the price.
