Top Tips To a Singing Career

Her songs have reached high in the dance charts – Scarlette Fever tells singers how to make it in today’s industry.

It took lots of hustling and many renditions of ‘Play that Funky Music’ at weddings to work out that I wanted to be more than “a singer.”

I slowly realized that I had something to say, that I had a musical voice beyond just singing.

Thankfully, it is still possible to have a career as a singer and just not from music sales. Here are my top tips to help you on your way:

  • 1. Realize that people aren’t going to buy music like they used to!

Your music is an advert for you, the product. Your actual product is anything you can sell; gig tickets, T-shirts, Tea-towels and whatever else you can think of. Use your music to spread the word.

  • 2. Get writing!

Never before has it been more important to promote your own music. If you want to have a career in music, revenue from your writing royalties is vital. You never know, your song may be picked as the title song for the next Bond movie!

  • 3. Network!

Facebook is a great way to spread the word and to get everyday friends to hear your music, but Twitter is the tool to use to network with the media industry. Make sure you’re familiar with and have a presence with the big boys of social media, especially Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

  • 4. As you sow, so you reap!

You are only as good as your last gig so be selective with what you send out into the world; great material will gain you fans, bad material will lose you fans.

  • 5. Persistence pays off!

Don’t feel bad about reminding people about who you are and what you do. You need to post your videos/music much more than once. It’s all too easy to get lost in the white noise of social media/spam.

  • 6. The more the merrier!

Your audience is everything!!!! Work continuously to build your database of fans.

  • Good luck and may the Gods of Rock n Roll be with you!
