Vocal Coach in Residence for March – Dane Chalfin

Vocal Coach in Residence for March - Dane Chalfin

He works with students, stars, and medical specialists. Dane Chalfin is a vocal performance coach, a director of the British Voice Association and a Principle lecturer at Leeds College of Music.

He’s worked with artists such as Courtney Love and eminent Laryngologists and speech therapists in his quest to more effectively teach singing. And he’s returning as our Vocal Coach in Residence for March. We’ve given Dane just a sentence to answer the questions below!

Quickest way to hurt your voice
Speaking or shouting over noisy environments.

Best way to a healthy voice
Moderation in all things, including moderation!

One way a singer can find their unique voice?
Tell your emotional truth, your whole emotional truth and nothing but your emotional truth.

Best advice you’ve heard on dealing with nerves
Remember that it won’t be your best performance. It won’t be your worst performance. Take the pressure off yourself to be perfect.

Is “X-factor” a bad word?
Not really, but I prefer to think more specifically of the artist’s unique selling points rather than a nebulous star quality.

Best coaching experience in the past year
Tour prep with Pulled Apart by Horses (see video). Proper screamy rock, but with real musical sophistication.

Is there anything all vocal coaches agree upon?
I’ll let you know if I find one.

Best advice about tech you ever received?
Always say please and thank you to your sound engineer. Beer works too.

What should a vocalist know about tech beyond their mic?
Gain is not power and vocal effects units are great in moderation, not as a substitute for a human voice.

Did you have a career setback that turned out not to be a setback?
Leaving a popular branded vocal methodology, which ended up pushing me into the research I am now known for.

Bad thing to say to your backing band/group
Do this/that/it now/faster/slower/differently.

Good thing to say to your backing band/group
Would you mind trying this/that/it faster/slower/differently please?

Most important thing to know about singing in the studio
Pace yourself! Take 15 minutes break every hour.
