Best way to a healthy voice? – Water and sleep

Best way to a healthy voice?
Water and sleep.

An unforgettable vocal performance you witnessed?
Random singer in a church. Terrible technique, out of tune and largely one of the worst performances I have witnessed.

So, what made it unforgettable?
Despite the poor technique, it was so connected to the sentiment of the song that the church were so moved by it. That single-handedly changed my whole perception of singing and what it means.

The voice is the best instrument bar none

Best coaching experience in the past year?
Worked on connecting to a song with a 15 year old before she landed a great advert campaign and impressed at an audition.

Is there anything all vocal coaches agree on?
The voice is the best instrument bar none.

If an alien landed in front of you and asked you to define singing – what would you say?
Total expression of any thought or feeling.

Best advice about tech you ever received?
Call someone who knows more than you.

What should a vocalist know about tech beyond their mic?
What’s the tech person’s name, number and favorite drink?

Did you have a career setback that turned out not to be a setback?
Got hit in the eye by an enthusiastic contestant on the last Gareth Malone TV show, The Naked Choir. Thought it was going to be terribly received but it was actually really positive.

Bad thing to say to your backing band?
You’re only here for a time so do your best.

Good thing to say to your backing band?
I couldn’t do this without you.

Accept that you are unique and that you don’t sound like anyone else

Most important thing to know about singing in the studio?
You can do it as many times as you need to but it will cost you more and more money, so know your stuff.

One way a singer can find their unique voice?
Accept that you are unique and that you don’t sound like anyone else.
