Last week we announced the Finalists of the VoiceCouncil Singing Competition Winter 2016.
Our finalists have battled through two rounds to compete for a grand prize of up to $1000USD worth of music gear. Almost 200 of you gave your opinions in the comments.
The standard in this singing competition is some of the highest we’ve ever seen, but, there can only be one winner.
We used a second choice voting system, and two finalists come joint third place.
Ale did exactly what we asked of our finalists: perform a unique interpretation of a cover song. His pared back version of Anna (Go To Him) is a slowed down, acoustic and longing rendition. As well as guitar, Brazil-based Ale can play the cajon and the harmonica. Watch Andrea’s original competition entry.
Follow Ale on Facebook, where he live-streams his live performances.
Andrea was very popular with our VoiceCouncil audience, for her powerful rock voice (influenced by Christina Aguilera) and dominating stage presence. Indeed, her favourite vocal gear is a wireless mic, which lets her leave the stage and interact with the audience while she performs. Watch Andrea’s original competition entry.
Gail Attard came second, for her slowed down, ballad rendition of House of the Rising Sun by The Animals.
At just 15 years old, Gail has an incredibly powerful voice and admirable confidence on stage, and attracted many positive comments from you in our showcase article. And if you’ve not seen it already, you should watch Gail’s original competition entry.
She lives on the small island of Malta, where she regularly gives performances on local television and winning local contests. Her ambition is to perform abroad in front of thousands of fans.
The winner of our VoiceCouncil Singing Competition Winter 2016 is Jayna Brown.
Jayna sang What Is Love by Haddaway; a brave choice, the accompaniment scaled back to a simple keyboard she plays herself, in stark contrast to the high-energy dance backing of the original. She demonstrates incredible power and range in under two minutes of video, leaving the audience wanting more.
Before our contest, Jayna has had success reaching the semi-finals of America’s Got Talent, and has notched up over 7 million YouTube views. Her vocal influence, she says, is Tori Kelly, and her personal inspiration is her mother.
Jayna has great musicianship skills, an impressive range, and sings very expressively through an innate ability to ad-lib. Her sheer vocal power, communicative energy and stage presence make her a worthy winner. And at the age of 15, she still has a lot of room to grow her abilities – we can’t wait to watch it unfold!
